Lipoma Removal from the Forearm: A Common Minor Surgical Procedure

At Key Health Medical Centre, we regularly assess and manage common skin and soft tissue lumps, including lipomas. While most lipomas are harmless, they can become bothersome if they increase in size, cause discomfort, or affect confidence due to their appearance.

Patient Presentation

A 65-year-old female presented with a soft lump on her left forearm that had been gradually increasing in size over time. Although the lump was not causing significant pain, it had become more noticeable and was beginning to cause local discomfort.

Following a clinical assessment, the lesion was found to be consistent with a lipoma, and removal was recommended.

What Is a Lipoma?

A lipoma is a benign (non-cancerous) growth made up of fatty tissue beneath the skin. Lipomas are one of the most common soft tissue lumps seen in general practice.

They are typically:

  • Soft to touch

  • Mobile under the skin

  • Slow growing

  • Usually painless

Lipomas can develop almost anywhere on the body, including the:

  • Arms and forearms

  • Shoulders

  • Back

  • Neck

  • Thighs

Although they are generally harmless, some people choose to have them removed if they become painful, continue to grow, cause pressure on nearby structures, or are cosmetically concerning.

Treatment: Lipoma Excision

The patient underwent a minor surgical procedure under local anaesthetic to remove the lipoma.

The procedure involved:

  1. Administering local anaesthetic to numb the area.

  2. Making a small incision over the lump.

  3. Carefully separating and removing the fatty tissue.

  4. Closing the wound with sutures.

  5. Applying a dressing and providing aftercare instructions.

Where clinically indicated, the removed tissue can be sent for histopathology to confirm the diagnosis.

Recovery and Follow-Up

Most patients recover quickly following lipoma removal and can return to normal daily activities within a short period.

Patients are advised to:

  • Keep the wound clean and dry

  • Monitor for signs of infection such as redness, swelling, or discharge

  • Attend follow-up appointments for wound review and suture removal

  • Review any pathology results if the tissue has been sent for testing

Recurrence is uncommon when the lipoma is completely removed.

When Should a Lump Be Checked?

You should arrange a medical assessment if you notice a lump that:

  • Is increasing in size

  • Causes pain or discomfort

  • Changes in appearance

  • Restricts movement

  • Causes cosmetic concerns

  • Has an uncertain diagnosis

Early assessment can help determine whether a lump is benign and whether treatment is required.
