Skin Cancer Checks

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Regular skin checks are one of the most effective ways to detect skin cancers early, when they are easier to treat and outcomes are best.

Australians love our outdoor lifestyles and making the most of our gorgeous sunshine - some of the sunniest in the world. At the same time, we have one of the highest non-melanoma skin cancer rates globally. This type of malignancy is the most commonly occurring in the country, with around two in every three of us likely to be diagnosed by age 70. This prevalence means that regular and thorough skin cancer checks are critical.

Why Have a Skin Check?

  • Early detection saves lives – Melanoma and other skin cancers can be successfully treated if found early.

  • Peace of mind – A thorough check by an experienced doctor ensures you’re not missing anything.

  • Personal risk assessment – Understand your risk factors such as skin type, sun exposure history, family history, and lifestyle.

What to Expect

During your skin cancer check, our doctors will:

  • Take a detailed history of your skin and sun exposure.

  • Examine your skin from head to toe using dermoscopy (a specialised magnifying tool).

  • Identify any suspicious spots, freckles, or moles.

  • Provide advice on sun safety and skin protection.

  • If necessary, arrange a biopsy or removal of any concerning lesions.

Who Should Have a Skin Check?

We recommend a skin cancer check if you:

  • Have fair skin, freckles, or burn easily.

  • Have a history of high sun exposure, tanning beds, or sunburns.

  • Notice any new or changing spots, moles, or freckles.

  • Have a personal or family history of skin cancer.

  • Are over 40 years of age (though younger people may also be at risk).

Frequency of Skin Checks

  • General population: Every 1–2 years.

  • High-risk individuals: Every 6–12 months, or as recommended by your doctor.
